After the first spy shots of the upcoming 2023 Honda Civic Type R, the new model has been teased ahead of its debut. However, the manufacturer says there’s still some development to go. As far as we know, Honda is also working on the redesigned Civic Si simultaneously with the Type R.
Moreover, the performance improved Type R variant will ride on the new rigid platform, which should aid 8% better torsional rigidity and 13% better-bending rigidity. We expect under the hood the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, with more than the currents 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
2023 Honda Civic Type R First Look
Outside, the high-performance 2023 Honda Civic Type R looks much more aggressive than any car in the lineup. We know that the latest Type R will benefit from a more rigid platform than its predecessor. In general, all other Civic models will ride on the same platform. Honda claims that all models will get 8% better torsional rigidity and 13% better bending rigidity. The front fascia of the new model dominates with a large lower intake flanked by a pair of side intakes.
The most significant difference compared to the regular model is visible on the rear. The new Type R comes with a large spoiler and side vents flanking the center-exit exhaust.
Cabin Features
On the inside, the forthcoming 2023 Honda Civic Type R will look more sporty than the regular one, for sure. In general, the interior of the latest Civic family is a step up in terms of technology and refinement. The manufacturer also added more supportive seats, and you can get many amenities optionally.
Honda has added a digital screen visible on the gauge cluster and infotainment to keep up with other models in the class. The standard package of equipment also included wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
2023 Honda Civic Type R Powertrain Specs
It isn’t yet clear what engine will power the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R. According to many rumors, we can expect the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 under the hood. However, there is possible that this engine will produce more output than the current 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. We wouldn’t be surprised if Honda added some form of electrification. Anyway, it will available with a 6-speed manual, and front-wheel drive will likely be standard.
The Si will also be available is, and it will probably use the same engine as the regular Civic. That means it will once again come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4. This engine is capable of producing 180 hp.
When Can We Expect the 2023 Honda Civic Type R?
The release date of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R will be likely to happen sometime next year. Actually, the manufacturer will fully reveal this model in the coming months. As we mentioned, the new model has been spied testing a couple of times, and last week, we got some teased images ahead of its debut.
Production will be made for the first time in the U.S, and the Type R should be built at the same Greensburg, Indiana, plant where regular Civic Hatchbacks is already assembled.
