2024 Acura MDX Review, Type S, Hybrid, Electric, Release Date

0

It’s been a while since the Japanese luxury make introduced the new generation of its mid-size SUV. With all the changes and improvements, the new SUV was accepted pretty well, so it’s no wonder that sales numbers are quite good. The 2024 Acura MDX will represent the third production year and, normally, we wouldn’t expect to see more important changes. However, it looks like the Japanese carmaker is things differently and preparing some notable updates. If we can trust rumors, the next year’s model could bring some interesting novelties.

This particularly refers to the hybrid version, which is expected to be revived with a completely new powertrain setup. Some sources also speculate about modifications to the transmission, which would make the driving experience even better. On the other hand, the overall layout shouldn’t change much, though there is always a chance to see some minor tweaks.

The 2024 Acura MDX should arrive sometime in the second half of 2023.

2024 Acura MDX Powertrain Updates

If we can trust rumors, the 2024 Acura MDX could get a hybrid powertrain. The previous generation was already available with such a setup, based on a V6 engine and with pretty respectable power. In this case, we would expect to see a completely new system. Details are still unavailable but we estimate that Honda engineers would probably go for a plug-in hybrid setup, based on a turbo-four engine.
The rest of the engine lineup would remain unchanged. Therefore, base models would continue with a 3.5-liter V6, which features a max output of around 290 horsepower. Driving dynamics are pretty good, while fuel economy is typical for the segment. In numbers, that would be 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

There is also the revived Type S model, which uses a more capable 3.0-liter turbocharged V6. This one puts out around 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque.
Some sources also suggest transmission updates. Namely, although pretty smooth and refined, the current 10-speed automatic feels a little bit too slow in the manual mode. That has been criticized a lot, particularly in the Type S model. Therefore, we might see some revisions, which would make these shifts faster.

2024 Acura MDX Design

The 2024 Acura MDX will represent the third production year of the new generation and, therefore, we don’t expect to see more notable changes. The current model is still fresh enough, so it’s early for mid-cycle updates. On the other hand, we won’t exclude the possibility to see some minor tweaks, such as new color options or a new appearance package.
On the other hand, the overall styling will remain the same. The same is with the mechanics, which will continue in the same way, with the chassis and suspension setup that provides pretty engaging handling, especially with the available SH-AWD system. Despite the high level of athleticism, the ride is reasonably smooth and comfortable, although some critics say it’s on the firm side.

Interior

The recent redesign brought notable improvements in terms of interior design. The new model feels way more upscale and brings nicer materials, along with more attention to detail. Moreover, the overall build quality is pretty good.

Typically for Acura vehicles, the driving position is excellent. The driver’s seat is well-positioned, while ergonomics and visibility are also very good. We really like that Acura kept a good portion of physical controls, which makes operation much easier, especially when it comes to climate control.

Besides very good overall quality, the MDX is also quite spacious and comfortable. The front seats are well-shaped and offer good support. The second-row seats are also very spacious and accommodate adults with ease. On the other hand, the third row is typically tight for the segment. The cargo area offers around 16.3 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 39.1 cubic feet behind the second row and a maximum capacity of 71.4 cubic feet. Those are pretty good ratings for the segment.

Features

We presume that the next year’s model could bring a few novelties regarding the standard and available equipment. Still, most things are about to remain the same, which means that base models should come standard with goodies like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch display, a touchpad controller, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, a nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, USB ports, Bluetooth, tri-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, remote keyless entry, push-button start etc.

Among options, expect to find goodies like navigation, premium ELS audio systems, additional USB ports, remote engine start, hands-free power liftgate etc.

When it comes to safety, base models should come standard with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition etc.

2024 Acura MDX Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2024 Acura MDX will arrive sometime in the second half of 2023, with a starting price of around 52.000 dollars. Key competitors are models like BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Volvo XC90 etc.
